Ceremony and Reception

The ceremony will take place at 4pm in the Mills College Chapel. Enter through the main Mills campus gate on MacArthur Blvd, and continue straight a few hundred feet until you see the chapel on your right.

The reception will be at the Student Union in the Rothwell Center, a 5-minute walk away. Head right out of the chapel, and walk until you see the Rothwell Center on the left. There’ll be signs.

Schedule

  • 4pm: Ceremony
  • 5pm (ish): Cocktails and appetizers at the reception hall
  • 6pm: Dinner

Getting There

Mills College is just off the 580 freeway in East Oakland. We recommend driving or taking a cab/Lyft/Uber.

Parking

There’s plenty of parking on the Mills campus, but the best plan is probably to park in the lot just east of the reception hall, and then walk back to the chapel.

FAQ

How does COVID affect this whole wedding thing?

We want our wedding celebration be low risk for everyone who attends, and for the staff who will be working to make the magic happen. With that in mind, we have a few requests:

  • Please only attend if you are vaccinated (if your kids are too young to receive the COVID vaccine, they are welcome, though).
  • Please only attend if you are not sick.
  • Please take a rapid test before coming to the wedding, if you can.

Mask-wise, we’ll be abiding by all of Mills College COVID safety measures. As of now, this means wearing a mask if you visit parts of the campus that are not the chapel or reception area. At the wedding itself, masks will be optional. We won’t be providing masks for guests, though, so please bring your own to wear (especially if you want to explore Mills).

Our ceremony will happen in the chapel, which is an enclosed space, and the reception and dinner will take place in the student union building and adjoining courtyard, which has both indoor and some outdoor tables. It’ll be February, though, so the evening might be chilly and we expect most of the festivities to happen indoors. We’ll have the windows and doors open.

As data nerds ourselves, we’ve kept an eye on local COVID trends when choosing where to go and what to do. In general, the Bay Area has a high level of vaccination, and a relatively low case count. You can find the NYTimes COVID tracker data for Alameda County here.

We hope it goes without saying, but we completely understand if you’re avoiding big social events and therefore can’t make it to our wedding. We’ve been there. Just let us know, and we’ll make plans to see eachother when things settle down.

Finally, even after all this time, the situation still feels very…fluid. While we’ve tried our best to predict the future, plans could still change very quickly, and we appreciate everyone’s flexibility. We’ll update this section as we get closer to the date, and we’ll email you if anything really important happens regarding safety.

Is it cold in February in the Bay Area?

When we first thought about having a February wedding, we did some data analysis and discovered…it’s usually pretty nice here in Oakland! There’s about a 20% chance of rain. Temps for the last 3 February Nineteenths have been: 56°F (2021), 61°F (2020), 62°F (2019). Having said that, we plan on keeping doors and windows open to improve ventilation, so bring layers in case it gets cold.

What’s the Dress Code?

Wear whatever you like! Though as noted above, you’ll want to bring layers.

What’s the Food?

Paella! Three kinds: seafood, chicken, and vegetarian. When you RSVP, tell us which kinds you want to try, so we know how much of each to make.

Is this kid-friendly?

Yes!

Is this pet-friendly?

Sadly, no.

Do you have a registry?

Yes, the registry page has more info.

Sooo, how did you meet?

Oh man, so there was this gorgeous librarian-looking woman in Dan’s class in grad school (shoutout to the University of Toronto Study-ers of Information!) and they ended up doing a really boring project together. Turned out she was also super smart and cool and stuff so they were friends but lost touch after Dan graduated and moved back to the Bay Area in 2008. Little did he suspect that she would get her PhD and get a job at Stanford a few years later! Actually he did suspect because they followed eachother on Twitter. Anyway, on August 27 in the year 2018 (O joyous date!) she tweets at him out of nowhere and they start hanging out again, this time without any dull school projects. And after a while they started telling eachother mushy stuff about how they feel, and then they started smooching and stuff, and then they bought a house together and now they’re getting married!

How’s Angus?

He’s good!
